Victoriano, International Street Artist

Meet The Highly Talented - Victoriano - International Street Artist

What advice would you have for someone looking to get into the same role and industry as you?
First of all practice, practice, practice, depending on your natural talent you may need more or less, but there are no shortcuts.

Secondly, do your research, the art world is not about painting pretty pictures anymore, well it hasn’t been for many decades so if you want to stand out you will need more than a great technique to succeed.

Third and most important: get out there.

What have you learnt from your years working in the industry?
I´ve learnt that nothing goes exactly as planned, there are surprises on the way so I have to make the most of them whether they are good or bad ones.

What career books would you recommend reading?
Any of Paul Arden´s books, a must read for any creative type.

What should always be taken seriously? What should never be taken seriously?
The Art World - answers both questions for me.

Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you? Maybe someone who has been a mentor to you? Why and how did this person impact your life?
When I was a teenager I had a sculpting mentor called Luis Alonso M, he is an extremely talented Spanish sculptor, but that’s not why he had an impact…

I thought I was pretty good at sculpting, and so thought many of the other 60 pupils he would teach, but only me and sometimes another one would just barely pass his subject, with a 5 out of 10 mark.

Some of the pupils cried in his lessons, his criticism was devastating but always on point, he taught me to never think I´m too good, to keep improving and to welcome criticism.

What’s the number one thing you want to achieve in the next five years?
To be honest I don’t have any fixed goals, the ones I have are pretty unreasonable, so to say one I want to have my name in the moon somehow visible from earth.

What is your favorite Networking conversation starter / ice breaker?
I need a coffee.

What is your favorite Hong Kong restaurant(s)?
I haven´t been here long enough to have a favourite, I like fine dining as much as I like local places. Maybe the best answer would be - the dim sum place next door.

Where is your favorite place to brunch in Hong Kong?

What is something you are looking forward to in 2016?
Keep creating and show my work around the world.

In order of importance, how would you rank: happiness, money, love, health, fame?
Health, love, money, fame, happiness

Hong Kong welcomes the second installment of Victoriano's ‘Cash & Carrier’ series, the show kicked off in Marbella, Spain. With a self-professed obsession with luxury iconography, the artist contemplates brands' imagery and status, ‘hijacking’ their elite character and reflecting upon their prestige. The show offers the artist’s stoic observation of a world in which the power of the brand is absolute.

VIP opening Friday, Nov. 20, 6-10pm
Saturday Nov. 21 11-8pm and Sunday, Nov. 22 11-6pm

California Tower, 22/F, 30-32 D'Aguilar St., Central

Each day from 13 to 19 November, Victoriano will hide an original artwork in the streets of Hong Kong, each valued at over HKD $15,000, graffiti laden shopping bags or 'carriers', similar to those that will be exhibited at 'Cash & Carrier'. One of these artworks will hold a ‘golden ticket’ for the show's VIP opening night on 20 November, where the winner can meet Victoriano himself.

Art lovers can follow Victoriano’s Instagram account each day to obtain clues for this city-wide art hunt - @victorianoart #CatchtheCarrier.
