Meet Victoria Allan, Founder and Director of Habitat Property
What advice would you have for someone looking to get into the same role and industry as you?
Start young. I had always worked part-time jobs and summer jobs in property companies when I was younger. On top of giving me a good understanding of the industry and the advantage of landing a job once I finished my degree, the work experience made me realize how much I enjoyed it. And the rest is pretty straightforward from there.
What have you learnt from your years working in the industry?
This industry is all about opportunities, and you can never overestimate how far some of them can take you.
My original training to be a Valuer (chartered surveyor) gave me a really good grounding in property related matters. And all as a result of that, I have since worked in planning, development, consulting, sales, leasing and property management.
What career books would you recommend reading?
I really enjoy reading biographies like Trump: The Art of the Deal, as well as motivational books including Thrive by Arianna Huffington. I think it really helps to understand how successful businesses were started off.
What should always be taken seriously? What should never be taken seriously?
I think any client complaints or staff concerns should always be taken seriously and dealt with.
Unrealistic or over demanding clients, on the other hand, can’t be taken too seriously.
Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you? Maybe someone who has been a mentor to you? Why and how did this person impact your life?
My father had a huge impact in my life and my business career. He was an entrepreneur himself and always managed to motivate me, help me keep things in perspective and understand what is truly important.
What’s the number one thing you want to achieve in the next five years?
More work-life balance would be good! Workwise, I’m looking to move into development work as more of a focus for my business. Life-wise, I’d love to have a permanent holiday home, where I can take time out with my family.
What is your favorite Networking conversation starter / ice breaker?
Obviously, being in property, asking someone where they live is a great opener. I also love to ask what people like about HK.
Where is your favorite place to brunch in Hong Kong?
Stan Café is a local favorite for brunch and lunch.
What is something you are looking forward to in 2015?
We have a summer holiday planned in Ibiza with our friends. I’ve never been there so I am really excited!
In order of importance, how would you rank: happiness, money, love, health, fame?
Love, happiness, health, money, fame.
