5 Christmas Movies to Watch this Season

12 December 2014

As we get closer and closer to Christmas, and as this Hong Kong winter finally starts getting cooler, spending a movie night indoors is the ideal way to rekindle that Christmas joy. Wrangle in the family, call up the friends, order take out and settle down for the night. Here are 5 movies we will be watching this season:

5. The Santa Clause 1994

There is something about Tim Allen that just tickles us in all of the The Santa Clause movies. The movies leave a hopeful and happy Christmas-sy feeling in your belly and Tim Allen throws his character through some pretty hilarious situations. His character, Scott Calvin, notices some unusual changes after he finds Santa face planted outside his home, which then forces him to step up to become the new Father Christmas.

4. Lethal Weapon 1987

Christmas becomes the setting to the beginning of a not-so-beautiful, however inseperable friendship. There's nothing like a little action and pairing up two people that hate working with partners, for a full day of mayhem. Throw in a deadly killing machine, a little cynical humour and you have a great movie people!

3. Trading Places 1983

When an executive and a down-and-out con artist become the subjects of a bet by two wealthy brokers, Mortimer and Randolph, Christmas becomes a time to remember. Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) gets framed for a crime he does not commit and is replaced with street bum Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy). Once the two of them discover what Mortimer & Randolph are up to, Billy Ray and Louis turn the tables on Mortimer and Randolph which makes for a great popcorn watching film!

2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 1989

This is a great classic. How many ways can things go wrong for Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) when all he wants is the perfect Christmas. Things go wrong when the annual $ bonus he was expecting doesn't happen. Next, his hick cousin and family shows up unexpectedly. It goes all downhill and in the most hillarious way. If you're all about family, then this is a good giggle.

1. Home Alone 1990

The McCallister family Christmas holiday checklist: tickets - check. Presents - check. Children - oh, KEVIN!!!!!! Kevin (Macauley Culkin) turns his home into a kids wonderland and protects his home from burglars while being home alone... by mistake. His family of 14+ members go on a large vacation together and don't realize till too late that Kevin isn't with them. This movie is cute, funny, cheerful and has a happy ending. This movie is totally number one on our Movie Night this season, simply because Macauley Culkin was the cutest little slugger ever!
